Design X Ecology

Uitstervende diersoorten, dorrende koraalriffen, microplastic in ons DNA, smeltende poolkappen, … Het is geen nieuws meer, maar wanneer worden we wakker? Wij als mensheid dragen de verantwoordelijkheid voor het voortbestaan van de aarde en alles wat erop leeft. Ons moederschip is aan het zinken en ze heeft lak aan onze excuses. Tijd om het tij te keren. Tijd om de wereld terug als bezield object te erkennen en onze complexe verbinding met haar te herstellen.

Meer dan een kwarteeuw geleden pleitte ontwerper Victor Papanek in zijn boek The Green Imperative voor een duurzame bewustwording in design. Naast het uitdelen van kritische sneren aan de toenmalige ontwerpwereld, gaf hij ook advies: (her)gebruiken van materialen die gerecycleerd kunnen worden, consuminderen, de natuur centraal stellen bij elk ontwerp en het afwijzen van zinloze esthetiek en fancy snufjes.

Anno 2022 blijft Papaneks betoog brandend actueel. De aangekaarte uitdagingen zijn nog urgenter geworden. Gelukkig schijnt er een kentering aan de designhorizon. Steeds meer ontwerpers worden zich bewust van hun medeplichtigheid en integreren een duurzaamheidsdenken in hun praktijk. Ze wijden zich aan transdisciplinair onderzoek en beschouwen hun ontwerpen als instrumenten die verandering kunnen faciliteren. In deze dialoog verkennen we samen met Formafantasma, Studio Plastique en Caroline Bianco de invloed van ontwerpers op het klimaat van de wereld.

MY REFLECTIONS/ NOTA'S/ WRITINGS ON THE LECTURE

Formafantasma is a research-based design studio investigating the ecological, historical, political and social forces shaping the discipline of design today. Whether designing for a client or developing self – initiated projects, the studio applies the same rigorous attention to context, processes and details. Formafantasma’s analytical nature translates in meticulous visual outcomes, products and strategies.

Plastique is a collaboration between designers Archibald Godts and Theresa Bastek. They founded the studio after their studies at the Design Academy Eindhoven.

With a common passion for cross-cultural investigations and societal topics, their practice aims to forge links between the past, the present and the future, the ratio and the heart, the material and the emotional, the real and the virtual, the human and the machine. By doing so, their work embodies the human needs among the rigid structures we are surrounded by, in a way that feels obvious or sometimes absurd.

This striving for empathic approaches in an increasingly dehumanised world, combined with the necessary rational methodology, results in environments and objects conceived for human life to bloom, as well as critical reactions on contemporary phenomena and envisions of future scenarios.

Caroline Bianco (FR) is Associated Director bij Atelier LUMA, een ontwerp- en onderzoekslaboratorium gevestigd in Arles. Via het onderzoeken van de middelen en de knowhow in hun bioregio, en het verbinden van verschillende expertisegebieden, ontwikkelen ze lokale oplossingen voor ecologische, economische en sociale transitie.
